Don’t Blame the Kids!

Our kids will become a reflection of the adults in their lives and the value system that they are brought up with. Let’s leave them with a fundamental value system that can stand the test of time.

The Chinese grow carp that if grown correctly are very beautiful and sought after; to the tune of $30,000 per fish. Thus Japanese business men got into this lucrative market, but there carp were weak, frail and unattractive until the Chinese told them their secret: Put a rock in the middle of the pond and the fish will be strong and healthy.

The carp need a reference point, as do our kids. You can’t put it there one day and take it away the next. Fifty years ago, when I began karate training the street talk was, hay man, cool, smoking weed, drinking cough medicine, popping uppers and downers This was the beginning of the drug age. Before that it was strictly beer, wine and cheep whiskey.

At the dojo (training hall), the karate students put there feet together, hands by their side, bowed and said good evening Sensei (teacher) . If you were disrespectful, smoked weed, or heaven forbid – RANK CONSCIOUS, you were weaned out. Now the street talk is “DUDE” drugs are at an all time high our morality is in the sewer, yet at the dojo the Karate students still put there feet together hands by their side and say, good evening Sensei.

Like the carp the Karate student has a rock, a reference point which is the Sensei. The Sensei is totally dedicated to the art and the students. You can forget to pay, but don’t you dare forget to bow. We have an expression in Shotokan Karate which is, the future of every country is in its school yards. The development of your child is influenced by every adult in their life. Your kids don’t make the movies, video games, or gangster rap.

The media has a saying; “if it bleeds it reads” Thus we are all bombed with negative news 24-7. Yes they have that first amendment right. And the adults have the right to manufacture and sell almost anything.

This is why, YOU the PARENT the positive influence (rock), in their life must get between your child and every negative influence you can. We all have a job to do, let’s get to work and make some great Americans.

What is the difference between Yoga and Qigong?

This is why I incorporated Qigong, Tai/chi and Bagua into our FOREVER 49ADULT & SENIOR FITNESS/WELLNESS PROGRAM.

Unlike Qigong, most yoga (with the notable exception of Vinyasa Flow) involves very little, if any, movement. It is movement, and not just deeper breaths, that normally increases the amount of oxygen to the tissues. No amount of deep breathing will produce more oxygen to the system when the blood is already oxygen saturated. Movement is required. Movement is also key to balance and excellent health. There’s the story of Bodhidharma who came from India to China around 500 CE and settled in with the monks at the Shaolin Temple, who were extremely adept at meditative techniques. However, they were not physically fit. Bodhidharma’s moving Qigong practices turned the monks into lean, mean, Kung Fu fighting and meditating machines.

Yoga is based on asana, which are essentially static poses held for varying periods of time. Although the founder of yoga (Patanjali) describes a progression from asanas to pranayama (breath practice), breathing isn’t built-in to a lot of yoga classes or instruction, or it isn’t taught until some skill with asanas is achieved. Another way of saying this is that breathing is incorporated into yoga practice at different times, depending upon the particular style of yoga and the teaching style of the yoga instructor. By following some styles, it can take years before breathing becomes part of the practice. By contrast, breathing is key to Qigong from the start. Furthermore, yoga is harder to do than Qigong, especially for older adults, and yoga does not have practices that involve energy transmission. On the other hand, both can ultimately lead to similar higher levels of spiritual awareness. In terms of public perception, Qigong is where yoga was twenty years ago. Also see Qigong and Yoga.

Here is a short clip from one of our recent Forever 49 classes.

You will see some of our students mixing some aerobic excersize with a little bit of self defense. These movements help strengthen the hamstrings, calves, and get your heart pumping. In addition, it helps with rythym and coordination between the hands and feet.
